An Afghan woman was killed Last weekend for giving birth to a third daughter. Police in the northern province of Kunduz said that her husband, a member of a local militia, strangled a woman known by one name, Stori, “in revenge” for giving birth to another daughter a few months ago. Stori’s mother-in-law has been arrested in connection with the killing but her husband remains at large and is probably receiving protection from fellow members of the militia.
The baby girl, who is now two months old, has not been hurt.
The BBC gives this chilling account: the mother-in-law, known as Wali Hazrata, tied the feet of the 22-year old woman, who was known as Stori, while Stori’s husband strangled her.
Villagers said that Stori had urged her husband to lay down his arms and leave the militia: “She lived in a hell not a house. But then she also asked her husband to stay home and avoid going out with these thugs,” one neighbour who wished to remain anonymous told the BBC.
While militia groups have some political support, they have often been accused of violence against women, robberies and extortion.
A number of horrifically violent crimes against women in Afghanistan have recently been reported but the killing of Stori is “one of the worst examples of violence against women” that Nadira Gya, head of the Kunduz women’s affairs department, said she had learned of. Local religious and tribal elders have also condemned Stori’s killing and called it “an act of ignorance” and “a crime against Islam, humanity and women.”
It is also a crime against Stori’s three daughters: who will take care of them now?
While ten years after the Taliban, there has been some progress in ending violence against women in Afghanistan’s conservative society, the killing of Stori and other recently reported cases of women being abused, tortured and mistreated show that much, much more remains to be done.
