President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Abdulwahed Omar, has said the series of killings in parts of the country has showed that life is not safe in Nigeria.
Omar said this while speaking at the NLC National Women Delegates conference with the theme ‘Women Workers and the Challenges of the Informal Economy in Nigeria’, in Abuja on Wednesday.
He said it had become imperative for the NLC to intervene in the worsening insecurity in the country due to the loss of many lives.
He said the NLC had taken a decision to rise to the security challenging by creating a forum for stakeholders to brainstorm on the state of insecurity in the country.
Omar said, “As we contend with economic hardship, we all now live in constant fear of serial attacks, particularly in some northern cities that were hitherto centres of industrial activities.
“We should all be concerned about these challenges, because nobody, no religion and no ethnic group or even foreigners are free from the consequences of these challenges.
“We are not trying to apportion blame whether President Goodluck Jonathan has not done enough or has not, but we are saying as major stakeholders’ in the Nigerian project, we in the Labour movement believe it is time for us to raise up to the challenges.
“That is to convene a peace summit in order to find a lasting solution to the insecurity in the country. By the grace of God there will be solution at the end of the day.
“We have done same with the Niger Delta militancy and so we can also to do it.”
On Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State, the labour chief called on Goodluck Jonathan to fulfill his promise that the election would be free and fair.
He described the election as a major test on the strength and sincerity of the President’s belief in the ethos of true democratic governance.
The Chairperson of the National Women Women Commission, of the NLC, Mrs. Ladi Oliyal, called on the Federal Government to take the expected steps to develop the informal sector to enhance the productivity of women in the society.
