Nigeria’s First Lady is devastated by the death of her mother, which occurred on Monday, an aide has said.
However, over 24 hours after the death of Mrs. Iwarioba, Mrs. Jonathan’s mother, the presidency is yet to issue an official statement on the death.
Mrs. Jonathan and her entourage her currently in Geneva Switzerland and her expected back in Nigeria on Wednesday.
An
aide of the first lady, who sought anonymity, as they have not been
authorised to speak on the matter yet, said Mrs. Jonathan is devastated
by the news of the death. The aide confirmed that Mrs. Iwarioba was the
foster mother of Mrs. Jonathan as the first lady’s biological mum died
several years ago.
Mrs. Iwarioba, who was fondly referred to as (Sisi Mama), died in a car crash on Monday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
She
was reported to have died in an auto crash at Elele in Rivers State
while on her way to neighbouring Bayelsa State. Her body was deposited
at the Kpaima Mortuary on Elechi Beach, Mile One, Diobu, Port Harcourt,
the Rivers State capital, around 6 p.m., by a Rivers lawmaker, Evans
Bipi, accompanied by many policemen.
Presidency
sources also confirmed that the deceased was flown to Germany in April
to receive treatment for an undisclosed ailment,
“The
First Lady was indeed very devastated by the sad news. We are expecting
her back to the country tomorrow,” a presidential aide said.
Mrs. Jonathan was said to be so devastated by the news that she was unable to attend to scheduled engagements.
The
First Lady was on Monday in Geneva formally appointed Champion for
Child Online Protection by the International Telecommunication Union,
ITU, which launched the Child Online Protection (COP) initiative in 2008
as part of the overall thrust to strengthen cyber security.
