In Nigeria, large segments of the voting population can be described as
apathetic largely because of the perceived undermining of the electoral
process in determining outcomes. Consequently, large segments of voters
do not participate; and while some segments of the electorate that
participate readily sell their votes or are disinterested in defending
their votes.
It is our hypothesis at Bara Solutions & Sunesis that the Nigerian electorate would be less indifferent if they are involved in the vote counting and tallying process. We also believe that technology provides a medium that allows voters and the general public participate in the verification, counting and tallying of every vote in an election.
The iWitness© is a multiplatform application designed to allow voters participate in vote counting and tallying of votes during an election. This process allows for a verification of the generally agreed election outcome based on an accurate tally of the votes.
The application is available on the web (www.iwitnessng.com), and for download on iOS (iPhone and iPad) and android platforms. It can also be fed by SMS (short message service) from all mobile devices, thus covering a broad range of options to allow maximum participation.
One of the key features of the application is the interactive electoral map that resolves into the different political wards in Nigeria. The polling units are situated in the wards and they can be accurately geo-located on the application.
Another key feature of the iwitness application is Election Reporting. The user is able to report from his/her polling unit events as they happen. There are three basic forms of reporting possible on the application:
Word reporting: Users can write a description of events occurring at their polling unit. The number of those accredited at the polling unit and the results from polling units can also be reported on the application through the Web, Android, iOS(iPhone &iPad) and SMS(Airtel 28059/Etisalat 38044) platforms. For enquiries send ‘Assist’ to the short codes above.
Picture Reporting: Users can send pictures of events at their polling unit on the application.
Video Reporting: Users can send video of events at their polling unit on the application.
