CBN donates N25m to Madalla blast victims
Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, yesterday donated N25 million to St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla bomb blast victims. Speaking during the donation, Sanusi said he was making the donation on the strength of the bank’s corporate framework enshrined in the bank’s Act. He explained that when the Madalla blast happened he was outside the country and when he came back, the Kano blast happened.
According to him, he planned the Kano donation which had attracted wide criticisms for Friday while that of Madalla was scheduled for Monday. While condemning the perpetrators of the blast, he said when Christians are attacked on Sundays or Moslems are attacked on Fridays, it is an attack on their faith. He debunked the sentiment that he is a fanatical Moslem, saying his parents took him to a Catholic school when he was eight years old and his wife got admission into a Vatican University. Also, he said he was a close ally of Rev. Father Mathew Kukah and Achbishop John Onaiyekan. Earlier, the Parish Priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Rev. Isaac Achi, had recalled that a total of 127 persons were affected in the blast but 44 died.
While four are in Gwagwalada Hospital, eight are in National Hospital. Others were, however, referred to other hospitals across the federation. Also, six vehicles were completely burnt and several buildings were shattered including the roof of the church, the parish house and an Anglican Church nearby.
