Officials of the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), have completed the mapping of the site where the Dana Air flight 992 crashed in Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos yesterday. The mapping required studies on how the airplane rammed into the buildings and other things in its path that got destroyed.
Also, the agency had evacuated all the necessary parts of the ill-fated airplane for studies and investigations. The spokesman of AIB, Tunji Oketunbi, who disclosed this to Daily Sun said, the agency’s officials had completed all their assignments at the site and had vacated the place.
“We have completed all site assignments. We have retrieved all what we need. We have taken the undercarriage, remains of the engines, the black boxes and other vital parts,” he said. Meanwhile, the black boxes comprising the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) have landed at the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) office in Washington DC, USA.
The CVR was expected to have recorded the last 30 minutes of conversation between the late pilot, (Capt. Peter Waxtan) and his co-pilot (Mahendra Rathore) and also the conversation between both of them and the Air Traffic Control.
On the other hand, the FDR was expected to have recorded all the flight parameters before crash. This includes altitude, heading, speed and other aircraft movements and behaviours before the crash. The Commissioner for AIB, Capt. Muhtar Usman at a briefing expressed joy that the black boxes were recovered.
He said the investigation was proceeding smoothly in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules. He said the government was providing the needed support to ensure a hitch-free investigation, expressed hopes that the commission would have its own fully equipped laboratory by next year, where it could download contents of black boxes in the event of any unfortunate mishap.
Director of Engineering at AIB, Mr. Emmanuel who took the equipment to the United States aboard Air France, hoped that the components survived the crash impact, to make content retrieval much easier, whilst also helping to speed the investigation process.
He said if events go as anticipated, the content analysis would be concluded within seven days.
