The palace and cars of Oba of Ado-Odo Ota; Oba Lateef
Akanni’s were on Monday set ablaze by an angry mob in Ado-Odo area of
Ogun state.
There
traditional ruler was attacked and stripped naked by some hoodlums
during the protest over a 2009 Supreme Court judgement which validated
the King’s appointment.
Ogun Police Command has arrested seven suspects in connection
with Monday’s attack on the Olofin of Ado-Odo, Oba Lateef Akanni, by
some of his subjects.
Pandemonium had broken out on
Monday in Ado-Odo, Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State when
some aggrieved residents of the town attacked the monarch and stripped
him naked.
The mob also burnt down the monarch’s palace in the
commotion that ensued when some aggrieved youths, said to be opposed to
his continued reign over the town, attacked him as he was being driven
out of the town.
Our correspondent gathered that the monarch’s
assailants, who were protesting the validation of his appointment by a
Supreme Court judgement delivered on January 12, 2009, forcibly stopped
the vehicle conveying him, dragged him out of the vehicle and physically
assaulted him.
Oba Adeniran was said to be currently receiving
treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Abeokuta, the state capital, for
the injuries he sustained on his head and other parts of the body
during the attack on him.
The wives and children of the monarch
as well as palace staff, who were lucky to escape with some degrees of
injuries, were also said to have been molested by the assailants.
The
Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, Olumuyiwa
Adejobi, told our correspondent on Tuesday that seven persons, suspected
to have taken part in the attack on the Ado-Odo monarch, had been
arrested.
Adejobi, a deputy superintendent of police, added that
policemen deployed in the town would continue to maintain security and
order.
He said, “Seven suspects have already been arrested and
the situation has been brought under control. Our men are still in the
town to maintain security, law and order.”
