Policemen in Unguwar Rimi, Kaduna, shot dead a 21-year-old woman, Fauziyya Sulaiman.
The victim lived with her parents and was a student of the School of Science and Health Technology.
According to Daily Trust, the incident occurred Sunday, August 3,
when Fauziyya was at a bus stop waiting for a commercial tricycle. The
police inspector Ahmed Usman on patrol reportedly started shooting and
the bullet went through the woman’s body, hurting one more person in the
leg.
The victim’s father Alhaji AbdulRazak Muhammad Sulaiman, who works
with Kaduna Ministry of Education, said the family was shocked, struck
and "utterly puzzled" as they have always believed police is supposed to
protect citizens.
The grieving father vowed to take legal action against the local police:
"I went and met the inspector with a name tag displaying Ahmed
Usman and asked him why he killed my daughter, but he could not talk. He
eventually confessed that he shot her by mistake."
It was later learnt from police spokesman in Kaduna that the officers
meant to disperse reckless motorcycle riders but the youths started
throwing pebbles at them, thus the officers opened fire. All the
officers who were on patrol on the fateful day were reportedly arrested
and put under investigation.
