The umbrella organization of Islamic bodies in Northern Nigeria, the Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI; Arabic: Society for the Victory of Islam),
has deplored the early Saturday morning murders of several students
at Government Secondary School, Mamudo, in the state of Yobe.
It
was said in a statement by the organization's Secretary General, Khalid
Abubakar, that JNI "received with consternation and bewilderment the
senseless killings at Government Secondary School (GSS) Mamudo, some
kilometers away from Potiskum, Yobe State, by yet-to-be-identified
devilish criminals."
"The callous and barbaric attack is utterly
condemnable in its totality, especially with the sacred month of Ramadan
approaching," JNI further stated.
The organization called for a
probe of the incident, as in previous analogous cases, the fact of
random gunshots that could be heard after the school was set ablaze is
very worrisome and "calls for practical investigation that must bring
similar occurrence(s) to a final end, to forestall future occurrence."
With
the emergency rule introduced in Yobe and the security checkpoints
throughout the state, the organization stressed that it is barely
possible that such a despicable act could still occur, and "the JNI is
seriously perturbed by it".
Some vital questions regarding the
killings were also posed by the Islamic body, such as "How did the
perpetrators gain access to the school? Who were they? Why were they not
prevented or arrested? What was the motive behind such heinous act?
Indeed, there is much more than meets the eyes."
The organization
therefore made an appeal to "governments at all levels to do everything
possible as a matter of urgency to stop these evil acts of terror NOW,
and restore the use of GSM in the affected states to facilitate security
alert in a situation where insecurity, has wrecked unprecedented havoc
against innocent citizens."
The JNI sympathized with the relatives
of the slain students, condoling with the parents and guardians who
lost their wards in the misfortune.
"We pray the Almighty Allah,
to grant the deceased forgiveness and mercy, while those that sustained
injuries quick recovery," the statement by the organization said.
The
statement also included the request for all fellow Muslims to pray
tirelessly for the restoration of peace and security in Nigeria during
the forthcoming Ramadan fasting period.
